Coyote Hills and the owl at Hoot Hollow April 2009

Sounds like a story from a fairy tale, but there is a Great Horned Owl nesting at Hoot Hollow in Coyote Hills. This is our second attempt at finding a specific bird, last week being the tufted duck and this week being the great horned owl. I'm happy to say we're 2 for 2, although you may need to double click on the images that look like trees to see the owl. The first image is the one I took from underneath the tree in which it was nesting. The other photos are taken by Karen who I got to climb up this side of a hill to see if you could get a better view of the bird. The view was better, but the lack of familiarity with the equipment has resulted in the images being a bit blurry (not that I could have taken any better pictures given my previous barn owl attempts in total darkness). Anyway, gorgeous day and gorgeous bird. Other birds photographed are:

  • American Coot
  • American Wigeon
  • Canada Goose
  • Great Horned Owl
  • Hermit Thrush (I think)
  • Mallard
  • Northern Harrier
  • Northern Shoveler
  • White-Crowned Sparrow
