Tahoe Meadows / Squaw Valley / Fanny Bridge June 2010

The second day of our long weekend in Tahoe - well, second full day if you ignore the travel day. We headed from South Lake Tahoe up north to take a look at Tahoe Meadows Interpretive Trail. This trail is at 8,700ft and we hadn't factored in that the trail itself would be covered in snow. There were patches of the ground that had snow on it and unfortunately there was enough that we couldn't actually tell where the trail was. We were greeted by several noisy Clark's nutcrackers in the parking lot, so it was worth the trip.

After leaving Tahoe Meadows, we headed back to the main lake and sort of drove for a bit and then decided to go to Squaw Valley to take a cable car up to the top of the mountain. Interestingly enough, the top of this mountain is only 8,200ft, so we'd actually been higher in the car earlier, but who cares about that. Quite expensive for a little cable car ride, but turned out it was worth it as we got to see a black bear with two cubs and a coyote. These were seen from a distance, so bear with the photos. The bears were seen walking from left to right, then all of a sudden, they turned and ran back a little way. This is where the coyote came into the picture and appears to be running in the same direction of the bears. Nothing really happened, they just turned round and carried on walking back in the direction they were going.

Last, but not least, for the day was fanny bridge. So called due to the people leaning over the bridge to see the fish below. If you're from the US, this probably makes sense. If you're from the UK, you're probably trying to picture a group of girls doing some sort of limbo maneuver over the side of the bridge. Really pleased with the common merganser pictures here and I'm pretty sure that's an immature bald eagle.

Birds photographed below:

  • Ash-Throated Flycatcher
  • Bald Eable
  • California Gull
  • Clark's Nutcracker
  • Common Merganser
