It is best known as the host of the Canadian Grand Prix, a race in the Formula One World Championship. The circuit is a temporary street circuit, with public roads around the man-made Île Notre-Dame island being closed off to form the track. The circuit is named after Gilles Villeneuve, a Canadian Formula One driver who competed in the late 1970s and early 1980s and won the Canadian Grand Prix in 1978.
